A 41-year-old inmate died at the Ellis Unit in Huntsville on April 26, according to a custodial death report filed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Dewayne McKinley Byrd was sentenced to 99 years in prison for the crime of “injury to a child.”
The incident occurred in 2011, when he brutally beat a 2-year-old child.

The child suffered very severe injuries, including:

  • brain damage
  • internal organ injuries
  • injuries to the eyes and body

As a result, the child:
👉 was left permanently disabled, in a wheelchair and unable to walk or speak.

❗ Important point

The child did NOT die from this incident – he survived, but with very severe and permanent consequences.

👉 So, the part in the image that says “beating two-year-old dies” is incorrect or exaggerated.
