She Watched Them Attack Her Son — Then Opened Fire

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Monica Moore.

On March 31, 2026 at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers responded to a reported shooting at a gas station in the 2200 block of Charles Street in Rockford, Illinois. Upon arrival, they learned a physical altercation inside the store had escalated, resulting in one person being shot.

According to investigators, Moore had stopped at the gas station while driving her son to a friend’s house. While waiting in the car, she observed another vehicle arrive. Court documents state two individuals entered the store and began physically attacking her son.

Authorities say Moore approached the entrance armed with a 9mm handgun. One of the individuals allegedly held the door closed while the other continued assaulting her son. Moore forced the door open and discharged the firearm.

One of the individuals was struck in the leg and later required surgery for the injury.

After the gunshot, the altercation ended. Moore left the scene with her son, dropped him off at a nearby residence, and later contacted police from her home.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows one individual actively assaulting Moore’s son while another prevented entry at the door, as Moore pointed the firearm through the opening.

Officers later spoke with the injured individual at a hospital. According to police, he was uncooperative and declined to identify who shot him or pursue charges.

Moore was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery for discharge of a firearm. She was booked into the Winnebago County Jail.
